The KWL State Track and Field Qualifiers compiled a list of great performances at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls this past weekend.
On Thursday, both the boys' and girls' 4x800 relay teams hit their top times of the season in their respective races: the boys (Park Sinclair, Ashton Krumvieda, Porter Miller, and Dawson Miller) were less than 3 seconds shy of the co-op record, running an 8:40.91 and placing 11th after entering the field seeded 20th. The girls' relay members (Autumn Baker, Taya Chelmo, Lily Baker, and Christine Gaulke) knocked 16 seconds off of their season's best, propelling them to a 15th place finish after coming in at 23rd.
Porter Miller and Dawson Miller matched their season bests in the high jump, powering over heights of 5'10" and 6'0" respectively, which also put Dawson in a 6-way tie for a 4th place finish.
The girls' Medley Relay consisting of Kaitlyn Priebe, Ryann Grussing, Dani Deffenbaugh, and Autumn Baker finished the day in 15th with a 4:30.83, sliding up a place from their incoming seed.
Friday was a day of several individual events, as well as the girls' 4x400 relay prelims. Lily Baker and Autumn Baker competed in the 3200m run, both racing to their best times of the season. Lily ran her race in 12:14.73, finishing 19th, while Autumn smashed her previous PR by 8 seconds, grabbing 11th place with a time of 11:40.73, which is also the new KWL record, which she already had her name on.
Dawson Miller competed in two individual races on Friday, finishing 16th in the open 400 m dash with a time of 53.66, and 18th in the 800 m run, with a season best time of 2:04.66.
To end the day, the girls' 4x400 relay team of Christine Gaulke, Ryann Grussing, Dani Deffenbaugh, and Kaitlyn Priebe went in as an 11th seed, running in the second of three heats and captured the 8th overall spot sneaking them into the finals on Saturday (with a new KWL record by a half second to boot!)
Saturday was the last day of competition for the weekend with Park Sinclair and Autumn Baker racing in the 1600 m runs. Park completed his race in 23rd with a time of 4:46.19, while Autumn knocked another second off of her KWL record-breaking performance from regions, completing her race in 5:22.13 for another 11th place finish.
The girls' 4x400 team (Christine, Ryann, Dani, Kaitlyn) capped off the state meet in the final race of the three-day event, knocking two more seconds from their previous day's time and capturing 6th place with a KWL record time of 4:11.61.
